In the Shadow of Gaurishanker documents the changes seen in Dolakha district in eastern Nepal over the past 40 years. The excellent photos in colour and black and white takes us back to vanishing traditions, costumes and knowledge, and the struggle of the hill people on the way to a better future. Roads, forests and potatoes are the main drivers behind these immense changes, and were possible through the joint efforts of the local people, government forces, and the long-term engagement by Switzerland.
Author Fritz Berger worked as a planner and horticulturist in Dolakha in the 1970s. It was then that he fell in love with Nepal and began to document in film, photo and text the life of this extraordinary country and its people.
Fritz Berger is the third of eight children. He was born in a farmer family with eight children south of Berne, Switzerland in 1938. After primary school, he undertook an apprenticeship as a horticulturist and at the age of 24 commenced his career as an adviser for development projects – first in Greece, followed by Nepal and Pakistan. Fritz has written a number of articles on these projects and made two documentaries. He has published a number of photo books and regularly organised exhibitions of his work such as the one in Nepal in 2010/11 ‘A New Tree in Charikot’.
