The Tarai: History, Society, Environment
Arjun Guneratne (ed)

The Tarai: History, Society, Environment is a much-required addition to the still modest field of the study of the Tarai. The importance of expanding the body of knowledge on the Tarai cannot be exaggerated—not simply because the region is politically important and economically indispensable, but because almost half the population of Nepal lives there. It is in the Tarai that Nepal’s future will be decided, and this book will prove valuable to expanding knowledge about that vital region.

Arjun Guneratne is Professor of Anthropology at Macalester College, Minnesota, USA, and the editor of Himalaya, the journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies. He has carried out research in the Nepal Tarai since 1989 and is the author of Many Tongues, One People: The Making of Tharu identity in Nepal (2002) and the Editor of Culture and the Environment in the Himalaya (2010). In addition to his work on ethnicity formation and the state in Nepal, he has published on the development of an environmental movement in his native Sri Lanka.
